Behavioral Intervention Team

Our Mission: To encourage a resourceful, supportive and safe environment for the RVC community.

Our Purpose: Rock Valley College is concerned about the care, welfare, and safety of all of its students, faculty, and staff, and we are committed to providing an environment where individuals are free to work, learn, and teach, unencumbered by concerning, alarming, and/or distressed behaviors.

The BIT functions as an interdisciplinary group with representation from; Counseling, Disability Services, RVC Police, and Student Conduct. The group meets regularly to assess and implement an intervention plan for students deemed to be at risk to themselves or others socially, mentally, and/or physically.

The BIT balances the needs of "behaviorally at risk" students with the safety and security of the larger college community. We will act quickly to respond to reports, however, we may not always be able to provide an immediate response to a concern. If an immediate response is needed, please call the RVC Police Department at (815) 921-4350.

Please Note: The BIT process does not replace faculty classroom management, disciplinary processes, and/or public safety responses to incidents.

You are not required to address any situation. If you have the skill set for addressing a BIT concern and you are able/willing to address the situation, you will need to complete a BIT report.

• If a student demonstrates concerning, alarming, or distressing behavior and is threatening self-harm or others, the report is brought to Public Safety. From there, the report is either resolved by BIT or Judicial Affairs.
• If a student demonstrates non-threatening but concerning, alarming, or distressing behavior, then the report is referred to either BIT or Judicial Affairs, if the behavior cannot be addressed by an able/willing party.
