What happens when truth is controlled, individuality is forbidden, and even your thoughts are no longer your own?
Rock Valley College's Fine and Performing Arts Department will present 1984, the authorized stage adaptation of George Orwell's acclaimed dystopian novel, adapted by Robert Owens, Wilton E. Hall Jr., and William A. Miles Jr. The production features 14 RVC students and is directed by adjunct theatre instructor Jennifer Thompson.
Set in a totalitarian society where the government controls information, monitors its citizens, and demands absolute loyalty to Big Brother, 1984 follows Winston Smith, a low-ranking employee of the Ministry of Truth whose job is to rewrite historical records to align with the Party's ever-changing version of reality. As Winston begins to question the world around him, he embarks on a dangerous journey of rebellion, seeking truth, human connection, and the freedom to think for himself. His resistance places him on a collision course with a government determined to control not only his actions but his mind.
First published in 1949, Orwell's novel remains one of the most influential works of dystopian literature, challenging audiences to consider the relationship between power, language, truth, and personal freedom. Although published more than 75 years ago, Orwell's 1984 remains a provocative work of literature. The novel has faced censorship challenges over the decades, even as its themes of surveillance, propaganda, government control, and the manipulation of truth continue to resonate with contemporary audiences.
"One of the things that makes 1984 such a compelling piece of theatre is that it asks us to confront some uncomfortable questions about the world we live in," said Thompson. "Who gets to decide what is true? What happens when people are afraid to question authority? And how much of our individuality are we willing to surrender for the promise of safety and security? While Orwell imagined this world decades ago, the questions he raises continue to resonate. I hope that audiences leave the theatre thinking, talking, and perhaps questioning a little more."
The production brings together Rock Valley College students representing a range of ages, backgrounds, and educational experiences. Among the cast are a student from RVC's Center for Learning in Retirement and a Running Start student from South Beloit, reflecting the college's commitment to lifelong learning and opportunities for students at different stages of their educational journeys.
This marks the second consecutive year that the Fine and Performing Arts Department, part of RVC's Division of Arts and Social Sciences, has presented theatrical productions featuring college students. These productions give students opportunities to develop their performance and production skills through a collaborative, hands-on theatrical experience.
Theatre allows students to explore perspectives beyond their own, develop empathy, and learn how to work together to tell a story. With 1984, our students are taking on challenging material that demands emotional honesty, physical commitment, and a willingness to wrestle with complicated ideas. I'm proud of the work they're doing and excited for audiences to experience it.
