We know that for some, being on stage for a production is no longer a viable option, whether that’s due to an aging body, a surgery, extraordinary scheduling conflicts, or simply a rough summer. However, we are absolutely aware that Starlight is more than just a theatre, more than just a community; it is a family! We wanted to make sure that there was a way for people to participate in a major way, be a part of the family for the summer, but not necessitate their being on stage; and so we thought of the Legacy Ensemble! For a select show, we will be looking for an ensemble of singers to augment the voices that we have onstage by:
- Attending the musical rehearsals throughout the summer
- Attending every show and singing backstage during the show
The Legacy Ensemble is still an auditioned role, so... audition!
Legally Blonde
This year's Legacy Ensemble show is Legally Blonde!Prior to auditions, you must complete:
- Before auditions, complete the Waiver of Liability Form. You may download it online to print and complete it or call the Box Office to request a copy be mailed to you. This form is required to be considered for a role.
- After you reserve your audition slot, you will receive a confirmation email containing the Audition Form. This form must be completed prior to auditions as well. Be honest about your conflicts and audition information. We will do everything we can to accommodate pre-existing conflicts within the published rehearsal schedule, but no one may be excused from "must dates" (review the rehearsal schedules below).

Your audition must/will include three parts:
- Performance of a Song: Select 16 measures of a song to feature your range and vocal skills. We prefer a song
from this summer’s musicals, but we will accept other musicals or songs if you are
more comfortable. The song does not need to be memorized, but it’s preferable.
An accompanist is provided for in-person auditions, but if you're recording your song, please try to find backing tracks or accompaniment to sing to in your video. We will accept acapella, but we certainly prefer singing with instrumentation. - Performance of a Monologue or Side: You must read a scene/monologue for your audition. Sides are available for specific
roles at the bottom of this page. They do not need to be memorized, but it helps.
In many of the sides, multiple characters speak. If you are recording, try to have someone off-camera speak the other lines or even combine different characters’ lines so that you can be featured more. Be creative to give us a better understanding of your abilities. There is no roadmap. For in-person auditions, these lines will be read by Stage Management.
Access the sides (linked below). Scripts are available for reading in the RVC Box Office between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on weekdays. - Performance of a Dance: You must perform a dance as well. For in-person auditions, you must attend a dance
call listed in the dance call section. So, either be prepared to wait or show up early
to your audition to attend one!
Dances have been pre-recorded for you to learn ahead of your audition. Choose one of the dances (Level 1: Beginning, Level 2: Intermediate, or Level 3: Advanced) and perform it. At auditions, there will be a half-hour instructional/warm-up period before all dance calls! Those who have a difficult time learning the dance or have questions about the dance can learn and ask at these times. Access the Dance Audition Videos (linked below).
*If you are auditioning for Newsies, you should highly consider doing both a selection of dance AS WELL AS the tap dance audition. Note: the tap dance audition video is not yet available, but please stay tuned – it's coming soon!
There are over 160 people cast a season who require sets be built, multiple costumes constructed, props created, etc. We simply do not have the staff to create all of this AND appropriately staff the shows as well. As this is a community theatre, it will take a community to accomplish the task.
- We require 8-10 hours of volunteer hours in and above being in the show for all who are cast.
- Volunteer hours can take place with costumes, set, props, box office, crew, concessions, ushering, house managing, almost anything!
- We will also be setting up shifts to clean after rehearsals and shows. Expectations are that you will pitch in when needed.

Miss Adelaide (Stage Age 25-35; Alto)
- Miss Adelaide is the principal showgirl for the Hot Box Girls, a flirtatious and sexy nightclub act. She is smart, talented, beautiful, and adored by the men around her – but all she really wants to do is settle down and get married to her longtime fiancé, Nathan Detroit. She is a confident, sexy, vivacious, energetic woman and is often the more powerful presence in the dynamic between herself and Nathan. Nathan may be well-respected and powerful in the gambling world, but domestically, Miss Adelaide calls all the shots, except one. She still lacks a wedding ring. Nathan’s inability to commit has rendered Adelaide so upset that she suffers from a permanent head cold. Due to her cold, Adelaide is often portrayed as having a rather nasal voice. Needs a very strong comic actress who can belt. The actress playing Adelaide must move well and have good command of her body and her costume may be a touch revealing. She is an accomplished and seductive performer.
- Intimacy Requirements: Will be required to kiss/be affectionate with Nathan Detroit, Will also be asked to dance/dress provocatively due to being a Burlesque dancer
Sarah Brown (Stage Age 20-40; Soprano)
- Sergeant Sarah Brown is a principled and idealistic young evangelist who adores her Grandfather, Arvide. Crusading against sin in debauched New York sometimes disheartens her, but she is very determined and clings to her optimism despite the circumstances. Fresh-faced and pretty, Sarah often attracts the attention of the “sinners” around her, but her buttoned-up, prim and prudish ways keep them well at arms length. Sarah has romantic notions about love and looks forward to falling in love with her principled and gallant white knight, but tells herself that she is happily saving herself until then. She’s not had much adventure in her life – and when Sky Masterson comes along and woos her despite being the opposite of the white knight over which she’s fantasized, there’s a lot of pent up energy to be unleashed. All that religious zeal and passion for her work gets channeled in a much wilder direction. Must be an actress of range, with an ingenue’s innocence, a leading lady’s charisma and then a sexy wild child inside, waiting to be unleashed.
- Intimacy Requirements: Will be required to kiss Sky Masterson, as well as be lifted/hit on while dancing in the Havana Dance Scene, Might be required to slap a man across the face that will be choreographed
Sky Masterson (Stage Age 25-45; Baritone)
- Sky Masterson, whose given name is Obediah, is famous for his ability to live on the edge. An accomplished gambler, Sky takes the rash bets everyone else dismisses (thus, the name “Sky,”) including one to make stuffy, prudish evangelist Sgt. Sarah Brown fall for him. He is a suave charmer, a ladies’ man, and a bad boy. He has had many women, but has managed to keep himself free of romantic entanglements. Sky is confident, clever, and resourceful – but is very uncomfortable being vulnerable, emotionally vulnerable or authentic. All that changes for him when he starts to truly fall in love with Sarah, and reveals a hidden sensitivity, buried inside. Should have the feeling of being just a little bit dangerous.
- Intimacy Requirements: Will be required to kiss Sarah Brown, as well as be comfortable dancing intimately close to another person, Might be required to throw a fake punch to another person in the Havana dance scene and will be choreographed
Nathan Detroit (Stage Age 25-45; Baritone)
- Nathan Detroit manages the oldest established traveling craps game in New York. He is well-respected by all of his gambler peers, and a man of significant clout. That being said, his status outside of the law has rendered him neurotic and it also makes him nervous about committing to anything permanent – including marriage to his longtime fiancée, Miss Adelaide. Stuck between the pedestal his peers have pressured him onto and the love of his life, Nathan is in a constant state of being needed by many.
- Intimacy Requirements: Will be required to kiss/be affectionate with Miss Adelaide
Arvide Abernathy (Stage Age 50+; Baritone)
- Arvide is a sweet, wise, and caring man who always wants what’s best for Sarah. Arvide has a parental quality about him, and is a source of wisdom and guidance for Sarah. Always has a twinkle in his eye. Should be a strong actor with warmth and gravitas. Should at least be a strong character singer, as he carries the solo “More I Cannot Wish for You.”
- Intimacy Requirements: Will be required to hug and console Sarah Brown
General Matilda Cartwright (Stage Age Mid-40s to Late 60s; Mezzo-Soprano) – The regional representative of Save-a-Soul Missions, General Cartwright is a presence much talked about and anticipated even before we meet her. In person, she is intimidating: a powerful, matronly leader with a no-nonsense attitude. Eventually, we discover she also has a well-developed sense of humor.
Nicely-Nicely Johnson (Stage Age 25-45; Tenor) – Nicely-Nicely Johnson is a gambler who has earned his name because of his sunny demeanor and his abiding desire to please. He is a kind man, though a crook, and filled with high spirits. Nicely is imaginative, warm, and genuine. He works as Nathan’s lackey and is extremely loyal and devoted to his friend. Nicely has a voracious appetite and must be a charismatic comedic actor and a strong singer (though a character voice is definitely acceptable). He sings the lead in the showstopper, “Sit Down, You’re Rocking the Boat.”
Benny Southstreet (Stage Age 25-50; Baritone) – Benny is a man who gets things done, and is proud of his place as Nathan’s right-hand man. Clever and slick, he is a gambler who enjoys being in a position of power in the gambling world. Benny is a man who takes initiative - sometimes more than his boss would like - but everything he does, he does with what he assumes are Nathan’s best interests at heart.
Harry The Horse (Stage Age Mid 30s to Mid 50s; Baritone) – Harry the Horse is a gambler with a reputation in the New York community, but also has connections in Chicago which allow him to bring Big Jule into the New York craps game. He is roguish enough that he collected a reward on his very own father, and came into quite a bit of money as a result. Harry is a bit more socially well-adjusted than Big Jule and does a lot of the front work.
Big Jule (Stage Age 30-50s; Spoken Feature) – A man whose reputation precedes him, Big Jule is a heavy-hitting gambler in Chicago. His presence in New York causes a major stir. He is a man of few words, but much clout. Typically, Big Jule is played by a large actor whose imposing physical person matches his status (though, there is some precedent for casting a diminutive actor with a Napoleon complex). He may be a bit oafish and a little dull, but offending Big Jule has terrifying consequences. Big Jule enters the story late in the first act, but is a force to be reckoned with in the hearts and minds of Nathan and his companions even before we see him onstage.
Lieutenant Brannigan (Stage Age 25-55; Spoken Feature) – Lieutenant Brannigan is a New York police officer who is obsessed with closing down Detroit’s craps game. He is an uncompromising, tough man, with a no-nonsense attitude.
Ensemble & Vocal Parts
- The ensemble members will play Sightseers, Gamblers, Hot Box Performers, Waiters, and Cuban Dancers. There are a few featured roles within the ensemble, which include: a drunk, a waiter, Liver Lips Louie (a male gambler), Angie the Ox (a male gambler), Rusty Charlie (a male gambler) and the mission band members Agatha, Calvin and Martha, and Hot Box girls Allison, Ferguson, and Vernon. Vocal Parts – SATB.
- Intimacy Requirements: Hot Box Performers will be asked to dance/dress provocatively due to being Burlesque dancers. Dance Features in the Havana Dance Scene will require partner dancing that will be sensual, as well as a dancer that will flirt with Sarah Brown and might be punched by Sky Masterson (this will be choreographed).

Access the rehearsal schedules below:
Jack Kelly (Stage Age 16-25; Tenor)
- The charismatic leader of the Manhattan newsies, is an orphaned dreamer and artist who yearns to get out of the crowded streets of New York and make a better life for himself out West. Fiercely protective of his best friend, Crutchie, and strongly loyal, Jack isn’t afraid to use his voice to attain better conditions for the working kids of New York City. Though living on the streets has given him a tough-guy exterior, Jack has a big heart and can demonstrate a sweet vulnerability – especially when it comes to bantering with a certain female reporter. Must have a great pop tenor voice and sense of physicality. Male presenting.
- Intimacy Requirements: Will be required to kiss and be intimate with Katherine onstage. He will also be required to commit acts of violence.
Crutchie (Stage Age 14-25; Tenor)
- A dedicated newsie with a bum leg that’s painful, but helps sell more papes. Though he walks with the assistance of a crutch, Crutchie doesn’t let it define him; when in a jam, Jack Kelly’s best friend relies on a goofy-sweet sense of humor and optimistic resilience. Crutchie is the heart of the resistance. Though his movement will suggest his bum leg, Crutchie should still be included in the dance numbers. Male presenting.
- Costume Requirements: Will need to walk with a crutch/limp the entirety of the show.
Davey (Stage Age 15-23; Tenor) – Les’s straight-laced, bright big brother starts selling newspapers to help his family earn a living, but becomes swept up in the fervor of the strike. A leader in his own right who is learning to use his voice to uplift others, Davey is the brains of the resistance. Male presenting.
Les (Stage Age 10-15) – Davey’s cheeky younger brother, is inspired by the freedom of the newsies and loves their independent lifestyle. A precocious and natural newsie, Les is an intuitive salesboy and a pint-sized charmer. He should present as younger than the other newsies. Male presenting.
Katherine Plumber (Stage Age 17-25; Mezzo-Soprano with belt)
- An ambitious young reporter, works hard to make a name for herself as a legitimate journalist in a time when women aren’t taken seriously. Quick, funny, and resourceful, she boldly captures the voice of a new generation rising in her coverage of the newsies’ strike. While she generally has no time for cocky, streetwise young men, she makes an exception for Jack Kelly. Though she only has a brief dance solo in “King of New York,” Katherine should have a great contemporary pop voice with a high belt – diction is key. Female Presenting.
- Intimacy Requirements: Will be required to kiss and be intimate with Jack Kelley onstage.
Newsies (Stage Ages anywhere from 15-25)
- Newsies include Albert, Buttons, Elmer, Finch, Henry, Ike, Jo Jo, Mike, Mush, Race, Romeo, Specs, Splasher, and Tommy Boy.

Medda Larkin (Stage Age 30-50; Alto) – Inspired by vaudeville performer Aida Overton Walker, this big-voiced saloon singer and star of the Bowery offers her theater as a safe haven for the newsies. An astute entertainer with great comic delivery, she’s a good friend to Jack and stands firmly behind the newsies in their fight for justice. Female presenting.
The Bowery Beauties (Stage Age 18-30; Alto)
- Female performers at Medda’s Theater. Female presenting.
- Intimacy Requirements: Will be required to show their legs and arms, if that’s a concern.
- Costume Requirements: As indicated above, you will be wearing the skimpiest outfits. That said, early 1900s skimpy is not the same as today. Mostly just legs and arms are showing. Possibly some chest.
Darcy (Stage Age 15-25) – The upper-class kid of a publisher who sides with the newsies. Can double as a newsie. Male or Female Presenting.
Bill (Stage Age 15-25) – The son of William Randolph Hearst who joins the newsies' cause. Can double as a newsie. Male Presenting.
Wiesel (Stage Age 35-50) – Also known as “Weasel,” runs the distribution window for the World and knows most of the newsies by name. Assisted by the intimidating Delancey brothers, who keep order by any means necessary, Wiesel is Pulitzer’s disgruntled paper-pusher. Male Presenting.
Oscar and Morris Delancey (Stage Age 17-27) – Tough brothers who work at the distribution window for the World, take the side of the publishers in the strike and are known to use their fists to make a point. Male Presenting.
Joseph Pulitzer (Stage Age 35-50; Baritone) – A pompous businessman through and through, owns the World and is concerned solely with the bottom line. Katherine’s no-nonsense father, Pulitzer doesn’t sympathize with the strikers, but he does eventually – and grudgingly – respect Jack. Male Presenting.
Seitz (Stage Age 35-50) – Editor, advises Pulitzer, but ultimately admires the kids’ newspaper. Male or Female presenting.

Snyder (Stage Age 45-65) – The crooked and sinister warden of The Refuge, a filthy and horrible orphanage, is concerned only with catching enough kids to keep his government checks coming. Male Presenting.
Stage Manager (Stage Age 25-55) – Introduces Medda's act. Female or Male Presenting.
Nuns (Stage Age 20-60) – The three nuns offer breakfast to the hungry newsies. May cast additional nuns. Female Presenting.
Photographer (Stage Age 15-30) – Takes the triumphant photo of the newsies at the end of “Seize the Day.” Female or Male presenting.
Mr. Jacobi (Stage Age 35-55) – Allows the newsies to congregate in his restaurant to plan their strike – when he doesn’t have any paying customers, that is. Male presenting.
Mayor (Stage Age 45-60) – The Mayor of New York City rebuffs Pulitzer’s attempts to shut down the newsies’ strike. Male presenting.
Governor Teddy Roosevelt (Stage Age 50-65) – A well-respected lifelong public servant, inspires Jack to stand up to Pulitzer.
Ensemble – The singing-est, dancing-est bunch that you ever did see!
Child Laborers (Stage Age 8-18) – There will be 10-20 kids of this age range who can/will be cast as the child labor underbelly of the time. These kids will do what their title indicates, they will labor. As part of the cast, they will be responsible for moving the set pieces in-between scenes. These kids sing and act, but they do not participate in dance until the final number. Still, they are a costumed and integral part of the show. If a role like this is still interesting to you, by all means audition!
