for Massage Therapist

For renewal of an Illinois massage therapy license you must complete 24 hours of continuing education every two years starting with your second renewal period. All courses given by NCBTMB-approved providers or by state approved massage schools/programs will meet this requirement. Educational programs used to fulfill this requirement must be an organized education experience directly related to massage therapy, which is offered under responsible sponsorship, capable direction, and qualified instruction. These may be experiential learning, theoretical or research in nature. Illinois Continuing Education Requirements: Massage Therapist: 24 hours biennially Special Requirements: 2 hours in ethics National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork (NCBTMB) Requirements: 48 hours of continuing education (CE) every four years. Six of the 48 hours must be taken in ethics. American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) membership renewal:a member is required to complete 48 hours of continuing education every 4 years. The first time you will have to complete those hours is by the end of your fifth year of Professional status.


All courses open to the general public or for CE hours for massage therapists through NCBTMB Providers.


CHRISTYN RITTENHOUSE holds a BA from Northern Illinois University- she majored in Psychology and minored in Sociology. She began graduate studies in Marriage and Family Therapy when a life changing winter spent in Mexico turned her path down the road of esthetics and natural healing including massage and qigong. She has been practicing esthetics since 1996, graduated from Chicago School of Massage Therapy in 1999, and became a Fijan (barefoot) Massage instructor in 2005.

Fijan Oil Massage
(1 Credit) In this 2 day class the student will learn how Fijan Massage has evolved to include oil for a completely comprehensive barefoot massage. This will feel like a very deep Swedish massage, only done with the feet. Students will learn benefits, cautions/contraindications, history, foot hygiene, floor etiquette, techniques, and a full body routine. Massage techniques will be taught prone and supine on the following body parts: back, gluts, legs, feet, hands, arms, abdomen, chest, shoulders and neck. While no massage is effortless, all techniques were designed to be wonderfully effective while being as easy as possible to the therapist. Mush of this massage is done while therapist is seated. BrING:: 4 full size pillows, face cradle, face cradle covers, 2 flat sheets, 2 hand towels, blanket, foot sanitizer, socks, and slippers. Please be sure to wear loose fitting clothing, and make sure feet are well groomed.

Chair Massage Core Power & Gravity
Not all chair massage is created equal. Posture is key to keep your own body in good shape. In this class you will be shown how to give a chair massage that not only feels great to your clients but also to you, the therapist. This class will give you a routine so that your massage will feel connected rather than scattered. you will be shown how to use your core muscles, gravity, and leverage for deep work that wont tax your body. These techniques will be added to your options that will help you to stand out and also leave you with more energy at the end of the day.

Foot Ritual
For thousands of years various cultures (Egyptian, Polynesian, Chinese...) have used foot massage and foot rituals. Adding new treatments into any massage room will increase the variety and quality of offerings. In this class you will prepare a warm foot soak with herbs, salts, and oils; experience a light and relaxing upper body aromatherapy and grounding massage; perform foot exfoliation and includes foot and lower leg massage.

Opening the Lower Chakras

(.5 Credit) The lower chakras (root, sacral and solar plexus) help us to live a physical life that truly works for us. Specific information about each chakra is covered: its location, heath issues, function and how to open and balance it to live a happier, healthier more meaningful life. This class is for anyone interested in doing personal inner work with your lower chakras to facilitate physical, mental, and emotional awareness and healing. The book and workbook required for this class are “Seven Portals To Your Soul: An Accessible Guide For Mending Your Life” by Marcia Phillips and can be purchased from the instructor the first night of class. (Cost for the book and workbook is $35 and are also used for the Opening Your Upper Chakras class.) 10 CEU’s for Social Workers and Licensed Practical Counselors.

Opening the Upper Chakras
(.5 Credits) The upper chakras (heart, throat, third eye and crown) help us connect with our inner higher spiritual self to live a life that is in alignment with who we truly are. Specific information about each chakra is covered: its location, health issues, function and how to open and balance it to live a loving, peaceful more fulfilling life. This class will utilize the tools and build upon insights learned in the Lower Chakra class, therefore the prerequisite Opening the Lower Chakras class is highly recommended. 10 CEU’s for Social Workers and Licensed Practical Counselors.

Geriatric Massage Workshop – Part 1
(1 Credit) This workshop will train participants in geriatric massage. Topics include, physiological, psychological & socio- logical aspects of aging, client assessment, cautions & contradictions, psychological aspects of contact with the elderly, and attention to detail in the assessment of the older client; modification of standard massage techniques and development of special methods to suit each client’s special needs; how to establish a Geriatric Massage practice, marketing to senior facilities, referral sources and active seniors in the community at large; and more.
