Ability to Benefit (ATB) applies to students who:
It is a federal requirement that these students take the ACCUPLACER placement test and meet or exceed the required passing scores or complete six hours of college credit or equivalent coursework*. This indicates that the student has sufficient “ability to benefit” (ATB) from college (post secondary education), and it is a necessary step before financial aid funds can be disbursed to a student.
Please note: Students are encouraged to submit their Financial Aid Application (FAFSA) as soon as possible. Students do not need to wait until after they have completed testing.
*As of Fall 2008 – If the student has satisfactorily completed six credit hours or the equivalent coursework applicable toward a degree or certificate offered by Rock Valley College – they may be eligible for Financial aid without taking the ATB Placement Test. See Financial Aid Office for details.
ATB does not apply to those students who currently attend high school or who participate in high school curriculum through the home school system.
ATB-eligible students must take three tests: ACCUPLACER Reading Comprehension, Sentence Skills, and Arithmetic in a single testing experience and meet or exceed the required passing scores (listed below).
Reading Comprehension: 55
Sentence Skills: 60
Arithmetic: 34
Students who do not meet or exceed all three (3) passing scores may take one (1) re-test within 30 days of their first test. Students are encouraged to use the waiting period for study and review. If, on the second attempt, the student does not meet or exceed all three (3) passing scores, the student must wait a period of three months from the date of their first test before taking the complete set of three (3) subjects again.
For test review information, visit the Testing Center.
ATB test results can be used for placement into Rock Valley College classes. Rock Valley College allows each student the chance to re-test one time in each subject. Any ATB test given after the second attempt will be used for Financial Aid requirements only.
