Rock Valley College’s Starlight Theatre will be hosting a Musical Theatre Camp, “Camp Supernova,” August 3-7, 2020, at the Fairgrounds Boys and Girls Club (609 Kilburn Ave., Rockford). The camp is exclusive to Boys and Girls Club members who reside at the Orton Keyes affordable housing complex.
Performing Arts Instruction for children on Rockford’s west side is either very limited or nonexistent. Camp Supernova is the perfect opportunity to bring these two worlds together.
The camp will explore numerous aspects of the theater experience, including singing and dancing, and learning about accents, stage directions, scenery, sets and costumes. There will even be an opportunity to create your own play. This week of star-building will conclude with a showcase at the end of the week to entertain participants’ family and friends.
The camp will be led by Supernova Director Christy Saunders and will feature guest appearances and speakers throughout the week, including RVC Starlight Executive Director Chris Brady and State Representative Maurice West.
“Camp Supernova” was made possible through a Neighborhood Grant from the Community Foundation of Northern Illinois and HomeStart for the Starlight summer camp project. One of the goals of the camp is to address the ethnic gaps in all areas of theatre. Currently, African-American playwrights, actors, dancers, choreographers, directors, and stage managers comprise less than 20% representation in live theatre.
“Theatre is a major industry with many employment opportunities and also teaches many leadership skills that serve people well both on and off stage,” said Chris Brady, Director, Theatre and Arts Park at RVC. “We hope our summer camp will introduce students to these different opportunities and inspire them to pursue a role in theatre.
