Rock Valley College will be hosting an informational session webinar for the Workforce Equity Initiative (WEI) on Wednesday, July 1 at 11 a.m. via Zoom. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about how WEI provides free training in CNC, Cold Forming, Welding, and Truck Driver Training.
Last September, the College was awarded the WEI grant from the Illinois Community College Board (ICCB) to serve approximately 150 low-income, minority persons within the College’s district that are currently underserved and underemployed. Participants are provided short-term educational opportunities that can lead to jobs with sustaining wages, while preparing them for additional educational opportunities as they develop professionally. The initiative also provides participants with stipends to cover the cost of tuition, fees and materials for courses required to complete the identified short-term certificate, as well as wrap-around support services, such as life and career coaching and financial support for transportation and child care, addressing their individual needs to be successful in completing educational requirements and securing post-completion employment.
RVC has served 65 students through the WEI initiative with 15 finding employment so far.
“Students who complete training through WEI can take the skills they learn and go anywhere in the world,” says Keyanna Washington, Workforce Equity Initiative Coordinator. “This program provides students with opportunities to take a new path in life and gives them the skills they need to establish a meaningful career.”
