The Rock Valley College business division Merit Award winners for 2020 are Crystal Schuring (Merit Award in Business Administration), Natasa Skrba (Merit Award in Accounting), and Kara Burzell (Merit Award in Office Professional).
Crystal Schuring is a Hononegah High School graduate who is completing her AAS in Business Administration at RVC this summer and will be pursuing her MSBS at Rockford University in the fall. She is graduating from RVC with honors as a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. She works in the sales and marketing department at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois where she has enjoyed 13 years of service and looks to grow in her career there for years to come.
Crystal is on the board of the Tommy Corral Memorial Foundation which helps raise awareness and provide education on mental health and suicide prevention in the northern Illinois area. She also enjoys reading, spending time in nature, recreating various craft projects from Pinterest, and cooking for her family. Crystal lives in Poplar Grove IL, with her husband and two youngest sons.
Natasa was born and raised in the city of Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina where she grew up and completed most of her education, including a law degree from the University of East Sarajevo. Upon relocating to the United States, rather than repeat the entire process of obtaining her law degree in the U.S., she decided to pursue a new career path in accounting and enrolled at RVC. In addition to the challenges of going to college, Natasa was learning a new language, adapting to a new culture, and taking on additional stresses like studying to obtain her driver's license. On top of all that, she is a wife and a mother to two toddlers. She is graduating from RVC with honors and appreciates everyone at RVC for their help, support, and encouragement.
Kara Burzell graduated from Stillman Valley High School in 2008 and later completed the medical coding certification at RVC in 2016. She continued working towards an Associate in Applied Science degree and additional certifications in business at RVC. She is graduating from RVC with honors as a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.
Kara has worked as an administrative assistant at RVC since 2016 and looks forward to using her newly acquired skills to continue helping others wherever she can.
“Because of the support of RVC faculty and staff, I am walking away with more confidence in myself and what I can accomplish,” says Kara.
The annual Merit Award winners are selected by the business division faculty and awarded to the most outstanding student in each of three degree programs based on the student’s GPA, passion for their discipline, commitment to their profession, and demonstration of a positive attitude toward their program peers and instructors.
