The Adult Education program at Rock Valley College will hold its 35th annual GED Recognition Ceremony on Thursday, May 16, 2019, at 6:00 p.m. in the Physical Education Center on the RVC main campus (3301 North Mulford Road).

Graduates participating in the ceremony are among the over 166 RVC students who completed their General Education Development (GED) high school equivalency during the past 12 months. Martez Boose-Moore and Oscar Silva have been selected as this year’s student speakers for the ceremony.

Martez had some starts and stops along his journey to earn his GED.  He entered the program last fall with a look of determination in his eye and an attitude that nothing would stop him this time.

Oscar entered the program determined to succeed.  He had several obstacles in his way but he was willing to listen and follow the plan laid out for him.  He is looking forward to being a full time student at RVC in the fall and is interested in a career as an EMT (Emergency Medical Technician).

Dr. Lori Fanello, Regional Superintendent for Boone and Winnebago Counties will also address the graduates.

Annually, the Rock Valley College Adult Education program serves approximately 2,000 adults with reading levels ranging from fourth grade to college-entry and beyond.  The GED, a national high school equivalency exam, is also offered in Spanish.  In 2014, the GED test was completely overhauled, making it a computer-based test to correlate with Common Core State Standards and College and Career Readiness Standards.  GED completers and high school graduates earn on average $9,400 more annually and have a 3% lower unemployment rate than those who do not complete.
