Hundreds of area high school students will attend RVC’s 21st Annual ALAS (Association of Latin American Students) Hispanic Leadership Conference on Friday, May 4, 2018, where students will walk away with a better understanding of options after high school, including career options and opportunities offered at Rock Valley College.
The event will go from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the Physical Education Center (PEC) with breakout sessions throughout the day in the Student Center Atrium. All portions of the event will be held on RVC’s main campus, 3301 North Mulford Road, Rockford, IL 61114.
Students will have the opportunity to connect with businesses and non-profit organizations from the community, participate in panel discussions, learn more about how to pay for college through scholarships offered at RVC, and meet RVC faculty, administrators, and staff.
The conference’s keynote speaker will be Judge Manuel Barbosa.
Manuel Barbosa was born in Mexico before coming to America with his migrant worker family as an infant. He moved throughout Texas to Nebraska before his family came to Illinois when he was just 10 years old. Barbosa went to law school at St. Procopius College and John Marshall Law School to become a lawyer. After becoming a lawyer, he served as an assistant state’s attorney briefly before going into both public and private practice for himself. In 1998, he was appointed to a federal position for the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Illinois, where he served until his retirement in 2013. He also spent 18 years on the Illinois Human Rights Commission and was the commission’s first chairman.
