Rock Valley College will host its annual Jazz Festival on Saturday, February 13, 2016, in the Performing Arts Room (located in the ERC building on RVC’s main campus, located at 3301 North Mulford Rd.).
The Jazz Festival is a daylong event featuring local school jazz bands, a jazz clinic, and a concert to cap the evening.
The school jazz bands will perform from 9:00 a.m. to noon and admission for this portion of the day is free. Participating local schools will include: Thurgood Marshall School (9:00 a.m.), Rockford Guilford High School (9:45 a.m.), Rockford Auburn High School (10:30 a.m.), and Hononegah High School (11:15 a.m.).
At 1:15 p.m., composer, arranger, and guitarist Ric Flauding will host a jazz clinic. Admission for this event is also free.
Flauding is currently Instructor of Music at Weatherford College where he teaches and directs in the Jazz Studies Program. He has also taught at Biola University, SW Seminary, and College of the Desert. He teaches online with students worldwide and has tutored theory students, including students from Berklee College of Music. Flauding completed the UCLA Film Scoring program, winning several awards for his picture scoring as well as from Billboard Magazine, American Song Festival, and ASCAP. His “Letters” album was a pre-nomination Grammy candidate.
Finally, the day will conclude with a special concert in the PAR at 7:30 p.m., featuring the Rock Valley College Jazz Ensembles with guest Ric Flauding. Tickets for the concert are $10 for adults and $5 for students/seniors and will be available at the door.
