Reading 101 - Academic Skills Building

This course is intended to help students meet the demands of college-level reading.  During the semester, the course offers opportunities for students to build background knowledge, improve vocabulary, and build study skills and test-taking abilities. Critical reading and study skills will be applied to the individual student’s other college course material to see a practical application of these skills.

­Each class is customized to the needs of the students. Topics that are typically covered include:

  • How to read and understand your textbook
  • Main ideas and supporting details
  • Time Management
  • Stress Management
  • Concentration strategies
  • Study strategies
  • Note-taking
  • Test Taking
  • Vocabulary building
  • Memory strategies
  • Using technology--study apps, library resources, presentation platforms
  • Doing research (finding credible sources, avoiding plagiarism, citing sources properly)
