About the Program

The Rock Valley College Mass Communication program provides those who are interested in a career in the media industry with a unique opportunity to jump-start their education. With state-of-the-art facilities and instructors who are working media professionals, our students learn in a hands-on environment that is as “real world” as it gets.

We offer instruction in audio production, sound design, journalism, broadcasting, TV and film production, and teach post-production skills like video editing, audio mastering, and motion graphics creation. Production students are also allowed to check out a wide variety of equipment for their projects like Canon Cinema and DSLR cameras and lenses, ZOOM audio recorders, Audio-Technica microphones, and more.

Students have access to our on-campus production facility 18 hours per day, 7 days a week during the semester. Our facilities include a large multi-camera television studio with a full control room, a 20 seat post-production lab, 4 audio suites, and a full audio recording studio. Our students learn on industry standard software such as Avid Pro Tools, Adobe Premiere, and After Effects.

In addition to our production facility, students are able to obtain internships with professional media outlets in the Rockford area and beyond. These include our area TV and radio stations, as well as nationally known companies via their remote, summer, or semester-in-residence programs.

Many of our alumni are already enjoying a great career in journalism, television, film, and radio. Some join the workforce right after their time at RVC, others do so after continuing their studies at top schools such as the University of Southern California, Loyola Marymount University, the University of Missouri, DePaul University, Columbia College Chicago, Southern Illinois University, Illinois State University, Northern Illinois University, and more.
