Audition Sides

Download the audition monologues for A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder here.

• There are 5 monologues to choose from (Monty, Sibella, Phoebe, Lord Bartholomew and a Lord or Lady Adalbert)

• Anyone auditioning for Monty, Sibella or Phoebe should do their character’s monologue.

• Anyone auditioning for The D’Ysquity Family character should do the Lord Bartholomew AND the Lady Adalbert monologue.

• Anyone auditioning for Miss Shingle should do Lady Adalbert monologue.

•If your side has another character in it, see if you can have someone read that off camera. Otherwise, simply react to lines.

• Anyone auditioning for Ensemble can do the Lord Bartholomew or Lord or Lady Adalbert monologue.
(the Lord or Lady Adalbert monologue can be done as a male character or as a female character)

Everyone needs to pick a monologue.  All monologues require an English accent (give it your best shot).

Queen Aggravain: Looking for something bold here. She loves her son...too much. Obviously, she says she wants her son to be married, but she really doesn't seem to want that to happen. Disguise that with character and humor when appropriate.

Winnifred: While this is her most docile scene and it shows her true compassion and intelligence, we're looking for someone fierce. We want to see YOUR Winnifred. And for those lines that sound a bit sexists. Make them the way Winnifred would deliver them. She's not sexist.

Dauntless: We really want to see the child-like naivete and boldness come out. See what you can do.

Larken: We really want the typical "Lady" here to contrast Winnifred's extravagance. She's strong, but still subjected to society. Show us what you've got.

Sir Harry: Really think Lancelot, here. A true knight, but also human.

King Sextimus: If you're "reading" for King Sextimus, make sure to have someone reading those lines off the camera. You really need to come up with some great mime!

Minstrel, Jester, and Wizard: Really come up with some character here. Less so with the Minstrel, but we want to see what kind of comic brilliance you will bring to the show!

If your side has another character in it, see if you can have someone read that off camera. Otherwise, simply react to lines.

While we do want to pay some homage to the characters, don't forget, the true characters are the ones drawn on a comic strip. We don't fully know who they are. Do not be afraid to bring your own spin to the peanuts gang. As long as it works, we can really go any direction here.

If your side has another character in it, see if you can have someone read that off camera. Otherwise, simply react to lines.

General: We don't need the movie characters or any version of these characters we've seen before. Find your own versions and we'll go from there.

Seymour: He doesn't understand his worth. That's the crux here. He wants something that he has no right to have, according to him.  Make that happen.

Audrey: Do we want character, yes we do. You don't need to be Ellen Greene, but make her your own. She is so much like Seymour it's ridiculous.

Audrey II: Go in whatever direction you want for a plant this sassy and aggressive. But get the point of power across. This plant will use every tactic in the book to get what it wants.

Orin: There are so many ways to play this creep. Find yours. We want to see it.

Mushnik: Not the nicest man himself. Will take advantage of every situation. Must play the desperate need for advancement.

Crystal, Ronnette, and Chiffon: Young girls who live on the streets of skid row. Give us an ample amount of character and we'll be golden.

If your side has another character in it, see if you can have someone read that off camera. Otherwise, simply react to lines.
