Rock Valley College has decided for the fall semester to offer the majority of classes online and limited face-to-face classes with six feet social distancing for continued safety reasons. So unfortunately, the in-person fall classes that were scheduled for the Center for Learning in Retirement will not be offered as originally planned and scheduled.
CLR will be moving forward with launching online classes using Zoom and recorded lectures in the fall. It will be different and a learning curve for everyone, but we believe it will work for many of our CLR classes and members. We realize that some of you do not have a computer, but in learning more about Zoom, we have established that a Zoom class can also be accessed by phone – even a landline. There would be the ability to listen to the presentation and ask questions, but no viewing of the instructor using this method. There are many CLR instructors who have already agreed to the online learning format. We will be offering Zoom training to instructors and facilitators in July. In August, we will host “practice” sessions and classes so everyone can become comfortable with how it all works before fall classes begin in September.
What is Zoom?
Zoom is an easy-to-use video communications tool that has become the standard for connecting with others face-to-face virtually. This online service is useful in business, education, and personal settings providing a way to communicate with friends and family remotely. This technology, that nearly anyone can access, allows users to meet with or without video and participate in virtual meetings or classes from their computer, mobile device, or phone.
Allison Den Braven, CLR Program Assistant, and Bob Bertolasi, CLR computer instructor and Media & Publicity Committee volunteer, are creating step-by-step written Zoom instructions and tutorials that all of you who are interested will receive. We will also have trained people who can offer one-to-one assistance if that is needed. Allison and I have a lot of details to still work out, including scheduling. There will not be a fall catalog listing a full schedule of classes and no Annual Meeting this year. Instead, the plan right now is to include a schedule of online classes in the summer and fall issues of the CLR Word to the Wise newsletter.
Following direction from the college to RVC employees, the CLR staff is scheduled to return to the office next month on July 13. Students and visitors will not be allowed in the Bell building until a later date. We will keep you updated as we get more details. This whole situation is not optimal for any of us, but with everyone’s efforts, we can successfully make it through this difficult time. We appreciate in advance your understanding and patience as we are all in this learning process together. If you have questions about anything, you can email us or call and leave a message and we’ll return your call.
Missing you all and looking forward to the time we can be together again!
