SHIELD Testing

Rock Valley College offers free SHIELD testing to all students, faculty, staff, and volunteers.

SHIELD testing is surveillance testing and can be useful in finding asymptomatic and pre-symptomatic cases. Surveillance testing is completed once a week and life continues as usual while waiting for the results – once you test you will be allowed on campus unless a positive result is returned.

Hours for RVC students, staff, faculty, and volunteers are Monday - Thursday from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

**The last day of COVID testing at RVC is June 30, 2022.

Do not eat, drink, or use tobacco products, including vaping, 1 hour before your test.  This will cause the test to be rejected

Where do I go?

The testing site is located in the Educational Resource Center building in the old café location. There are now directional signs in place at each entrance to guide you to the testing site area.

When are appointments available?

Testing will occur Monday through Thursday for students, staff, and faculty at the SHIELD Illinois COVID-19 Testing Center on the Rock Valley College Main Campus. Hours for RVC students, staff, and faculty are Monday - Thursday from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. To get in contact with the testing site during operating hours call (815) 921-1027.

Saliva Testing

Students, staff, and faculty are encouraged to make an appointment for saliva testing through the SHIELD portal and you may test any time during the open hours that day (hours of operation noted above) even if it is not your appointment time. Just bring your QR code. If you forgot to register for an appointment, you can walk-in up to 10 minutes before the site closes. Having an appointment and bringing your QR code speeds up your time spent at the testing site greatly.

Why do I have to do this?

As we return to campus, ensuring the health and safety of our campus community is of utmost importance. Routine testing can help us identify infected but asymptomatic individuals and guide them for isolation to help stop the transmission of COVID-19 by catching early infections.

How is the testing conducted?

Before your test, do not eat, drink (including water), brush teeth, chew gum, smoke, or use tobacco products within 60 minutes of providing a saliva sample. Doing any of these things within 60 minutes of providing a sample could produce an inconclusive result and require the individual to re-test.

At the testing center, you will be instructed to pick up a tube and drool into it until an adequate sample is obtained. This usually takes only a few minutes. Thinking of something sour or your favorite food may help you salivate.

The test is a PCR-based test that can be used for surveillance or diagnostic testing for COVID-19.

FDA Fact Sheet for Patients

How do I get my test results?

Test results will be posted in the SHIELD Illinois patient portal after the lab results are completed, usually the same day as you are tested.

What if I am symptomatic?

When arriving for your COVID-19 test please do not enter the building. Park in one of the reserved parking spots in the front of parking lot 8 of the Educational Resource Center.
