Student Success Tips for Online Learning

Ask questions: Be sure to ask for clarification or discuss any course issues you may have with your instructor, especially if you are new to online learning. If your instructor does not reply right away, they may be unusually busy, so ask for clarification from them regarding the length of time you should wait before you reach out again. Contact student services as a resource, we have provided a document under the Welcome Module for assistance as well – everyone at Rock Valley College is here to support you!

Create a productive study environment: Find or create a space at home where you study best and create a routine so you have the time set aside whether it is every day or every other day. Routine will help with the transition. Items you need to stay organized will include internet connection, laptop, tablet, smartphone, textbooks, headphones, microphone and camera (these are typically in a laptop).

Create a schedule: Set aside enough time for each week’s work. Setting reminders on your phone or other devices, using post-it notes, or keeping a calendar can help you stay on task. Practicing time management will be key during these extraordinary times.

Participate often: Participate with your peers and your instructor to stay connected in your course; share ideas and ask questions - offering feedback and working together are ways to maintain a supportive and active class environment and avoid the feeling of isolation.

Utilize the student EAGLE course: Rock Valley College has set up an entire course to help you with the transition to online learning. Watch the videos and email the college with questions or concerns. We’re here to help you with the transition to online classes.
