The Golden Eagles and head coach Ben Staupe may have lost four all-conference players from a team that set a school record with 39 wins last season, but they have wasted little time establishing their dominance in 2009. Led by super sophomore Kristy Bourquin and an electric group of freshmen, RVC is off to a perfect 5-0 start to their season, including road wins against two of the top four ranked teams in the NJCAA’s preseason Division III poll.
On August 28-29, the Golden Eagles ripped through the Ridgewater Tournament as the only undefeated team that weekend. They knocked off Central Lakes, Ellsworth, NIACC, and host Ridgewater (then #3 in the nation). They followed that up with a huge road win at conference rival Harper College on Tuesday night, winning in three straight, 25-17, 25-18, 25-11. Harper entered as the #4 ranked team in the nation, while RVC came in ranked #6. Rock Valley prevailed at Harper for the first time since 2004. RVC and Harper have shared the conference title the last two seasons with each team winning at home both seasons.
The Golden Eagles will play their home opener on Thursday, September 3 at 6:00 p.m. versus Triton in the first sporting event to be held in the newly remodeled Physical Education Center on the RVC main campus.
