Your Career as an Electrician Apprentice

Without electricity, modern society is in trouble. Electricity is as essential today as air, water and food. And through the Electrician Apprenticeship program you’ll learn to harness high voltage so that it behaves and safely flows wherever society needs it. This program combines classroom studies with on-the-job training, so you’ll be able to apply what you’ve been taught. You’ll learn theory. You’ll learn how to correctly and safely wire buildings, machines, motors, transformers and controls to meet standards. You’ll know how to use testing equipment to check circuitry. You’ll be able to read a blueprint to install electrical systems in factories, offices, homes and other structures to meet building codes.

Job Outlook

Well-trained electricians will find a favorable job market through 2010. The U.S. Department of Labor says that as the population and economy grows, so will construction. More electricians will be needed to install and maintain electrical devices and wiring in buildings. Also, rising numbers of retiring electricians from the current pool of 700,000 will create demand for new recruits. And factories will install more robots and automated manufacturing systems that will need extensive electrical work. The future looks bright as the Labor Department expects jobs for electricians to grow between 10 and 20 percent during the next several years.

Electrician I, $28,199 - $37,669

(Rate is in the middle of the pay scale. The U.S. Department of Labor says child care workers with more education make more money.)
